Let’s Be Civil
If most of us are honest, we are weary of the vitriol and negativity that has been part of the current election cycle.
As the 2024 Presidential Election cycle comes to a close today, let’s resolve to be kind and respectful to those with whom we disagree. About half the residents of the United States will have a new president they did not vote for and did not support. Our current environment is very challenging and it is tempting to air grievances with those who see things differently than we do. Choosing to lean into civility and respect will help us land in a better place than leaning into discord. As the CEO of StartswithUS Tom Fishman stated so well, “We must maintain that treating each other with contempt and holding a binary, zero-sum, us-vs.-them mindset is lose-lose for all of us.”
Especially in our workplaces, we need to be respectful and kind with those who see things differently than we do. Leaders need to facilitate opportunities for those with opposing views to listen respectfully to one another and put guardrails on what can and cannot be discussed when it comes to political disagreements in the workplace. We can’t turn away from addressing these issues in the workplace, we must face them with vulnerability and humility.
